Artist Statement
Firmly rooted in both painting and fiber traditions, my practice begins as a straightforward, formal process concerning texture, color, and shape. I categorize my mixed media works as quilts regardless of the materials involved. For me, quilting reaches far beyond traditional fiber materials. Quilting is a generative practice that amasses care; repeating a form ad infinitum with each repetition being also a renewal. Conceptually, my quilting connects to psychotherapist Dr. Jessica Benjamin’s theory of the Third. This theory suggests that when two people truly understand one another, they create a new third thing. A separate entity that is their relationship. Isn’t that exactly what a quilt is? Blending materials and practices, my quilts propose their own kind of Third; a messy blended space that is vulnerable, tender, and, above all, full of hope.
